Understanding value is important when learning how to render form. The students in Saturday Art Class worked from set ups of ribbons leaves and feathers with graphite pencils. Pencil is a great place to start because you can erase and change things when you’re learning. I teach the kids how to use a kneaded eraser to lighten areas and blending stumps to create soft gradations.
Here’s what’s been happening in my Saturday Art Class. In September, students 8 years old started out with blind contour drawings of flowers. The students were instructed to only look at the subject they were drawing and not the paper. From there we move onto contour drawings on white and colored paper. It was great to see their confidence build from the blind contour drawing to the contour drawing that they did in colored pencil and marker. “Look Ma no eraser!”
